Since the KC wood show was canceled and I had a good selection of wood ready for the show, and given the current situation I thought of an idea. I am going to offer a 15% discount on all the wood I have ready for the KC show. I have blocks of basswood, butternut, bark on boards, thin stock in many different sizes. Since it looks as if other shows may have to cancel I thought this might help people in some small way. If you are interested in taking advantage of the offer you can call me or email.

Sometimes something comes along and presents a challenge, sometimes it's best to just walk away. I have really never mastered that principal and often jump in without checking the water depth. This is one of those cases, these white oak logs were way too big to handle or even move so they all had to be split with a chainsaw. This one was the smallest log so I cut it in half to try and get a few slabs out of it. It took a little adjusting and a little trimming but I did manage to get this 1/2 cut up. It maxed out the saw cut roller to roller but it did yield some interesting slabs and also some 4/4 qtr sawn oak boards
I just pulled these bark on boards out of the kiln. They will get run thru the planer next and be ready for someone to make a masterpiece out of.
I decided to tackle this oak log project now that the weather has cooled off a little. This is the largest log I have ever tried to saw and was so big it had to be split with a chainsaw. It took 3 gallons of gas, 6 chains, and 2 saws but I did manage to get it done. It was a lot of work, but hopefully will yield some great quarter sawn oak lumber. The cuts aren't perfectly straight but, it will work for getting manageable size logs to saw up.
I bought a Norwood HD36 mill and while I get all the kinks worked out get used to having a mill with hydraulics I thought i would cut up some butternut. I love butternut it smells so wonderful and it cuts like a dream. These logs I am cutting 16/4 for woodcarving stock. It is very sad that the butternut trees are all dying as it is such a wonderful wood to work with. I have not been sawing too much lately, it was a long cold winter and I just wasn't really interested in sawing logs in the cold. This sugar maple had early in 2018 and sat all summer so I picked it up loaded it and cut it up into slabs. The slabs are 2 1/2 " thick and should make great slab table tops. If you listen close at the very end you will hear me slice thru 3 nails not ideal but it does happen. I also posted a picture of one of the slabs it has some character and should look great when the wood is finished.
I decided to try and make a few wedding cookies on my new mill. I had it down pretty well on my old mill but this one is a little different. It just goes to show you not everything goes as planned. |
